Subject:   Architect & Engineer Acceptable Seals

The Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC) has received clarification from the Bureau of Professional Licensing (BPL) regarding acceptable seals from licensed architects and engineers on construction documents.

R 339.15404 Architect seal. Rule 404.
(1) The seal of an architect must include the licensee’s name and full license number, as shown on the licensee’s state-issued architect license and indicate “State of Michigan” and “Licensed Architect” in the legend surrounding the seal.
(2) A licensee's seal must be used by the licensee whose name appears on the seal for as long as the license is in effect. A licensee is responsible for the security of the licensee's seal.

R 339.16032 Professional engineer seal. Rule 32.
(1) The seal of a professional engineer must include the licensee’s name and full license number as shown on the licensee’s state-issued professional engineer license and indicate “State of Michigan’ and “Licensed Professional Engineer” in the legend surrounding the seal.
(2) A licensee’s seal must be used by the licensee whose name appears on the seal for as long as the license is in effect.  A licensee is responsible for the security of the licensee’s seal.

Therefore, if the name and license number on the seal does not match the name and number listed in the state licensing records, the seal is considered unacceptable.  If an unacceptable seal is received by BCC on construction documents, the application will be placed on hold until the corrected seal on the construction documents is submitted in accordance with the applicable architect and/or engineer licensing rules.

Questions regarding these rules should be directed to BPL at [email protected] or 517-241-0199.  Questions regarding your plan review or permit application should be directed to BCC at [email protected] or 517-241-9313, option 2.
