Become an inspector

How to Become a Mechanical Inspector in the State of Michigan

An applicant for registration as a Mechanical Inspector must possess a State of Michigan mechanical license for not less than one year in three or more of the following categories:   (Note: If your license does not include at least 3 categories, your application may still be considered by the State.)
·      Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping
·      HVAC
·      Refrigeration
·      Fire Suppression

A person who becomes employed by an enforcing agency as an inspector shall, within 30 days of employment, submit an application for registration with the state.

The requirement of Michigan Administrative Code Rule
R 408.30031  "Standards for provisional registration"  that a first time applicant complete at least 18 hours of training in order to be provisionally registered as an inspector is no longer in effect, although that requirement is still listed on the application.  If you have questions regarding this requirement, contact the Licensing and Complaints Division of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) at (517) 241-8838.

For more information, visit the Code Official Registration section of LARA's  web page
